Most of those who enter hell will be Women!

Most of Hell’s inhabitants are women

It was narrated from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that women will form the majority of the people of Hell.

🔸It was narrated from ‘Imran ibn Husayn that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “I looked into Paradise and I saw that the majority of its people were the poor. And I looked into Hell and I saw that the majority of its people are women.”

[Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3241; Muslim, 2737]

With regard to the reason for this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about it and he explained the reason.

🔸It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه said

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “I was shown Hell and I have never seen anything more terrifying than it. And I saw that the majority of its people are women.

They asked, “Why, O Messenger of Allaah? ”

He (saw) said, “Because of their ingratitude (kufr).

It was said, “Are they ungrateful to Allaah?”

He (saw) said, “They are ungrateful to their companions (husbands) and ungrateful for good treatment. If you are kind to one of them for a lifetime then she sees one (undesirable) thing in you, she will say, ‘I have never had anything good from you.’

[Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1052]

🔸In another narration

It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah رضي الله عنه said: “I attended Eid prayers with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم He started with the prayer before the khutbah, with no adhaan or iqaamah. Then he stood up, leaning on Bilaal, speaking of fear of Allaah (taqwa) and urging us to obey Him. He preached to the people and reminded them. Then he went over to the women and preached to them and reminded them. Then he said, ‘Give in charity, for you are the majority of the fuel of Hell’.

A woman with dark cheeks stood up in the midst of the women and said, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allaah?’

He (saw) said, ‘Because you complain too much and are ungrateful to your husbands.’ Then they started to give their jewellery in charity, throwing their earrings and rings into Bilaal’s cloak.”

[Muslim 885 ]

Very few women will enter Paradise

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mention;

“Few of the inhabitants of Paradise are women.” [Narrated by Imraan Ibn Husayn, Muslim ]

How rare are the women of Paradise amongst us

‘Amr Ibn al-‘Aas mentioned ‘Whilst we were with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم in this valley (on this mountain path), he صلى الله عليه وسلم said;

“Look, can you see anything?”

We said, ‘We se crows, and one of them stands out because its beak and feet are red.‘

The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said; “No women will enter Paradise except those who are as rare among them as this crow is among the others.”

[Ahmad & Abu Ya’la, via ‘Amr Ibn al-‘Aas, see also Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah, 4/466. hadeeth : 1851]

Qurtubee mentions in his ‘At-Tadhkhirah’ (1/369):

Women will be few among the inhabitants of Paradise because in most cases they prefer the immediate pleasures of this life, as they are (generally) less wise and unable to keep the hereafter in mind.

They are too weak to strive (alone) and prepare themselves for it, and are more inclined towards this world.

In spite of all this, they are the strongest factor in this world that distracts men from the Hereafter, because men are inclined to desire them and they are not concerned with the Hereafter.

They are quick to follow those who call them to deviate from Islaam, and reluctant to follow those pious people who call them to the Hereafterand righteous deeds.”

Another factor why many people will be driven to hell (in a thirsty state) is mentioned in a hadeeth collected by Bukhaaree and Muslim  on the authority of Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه , where the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said;

“Hell is surrounded with desires, and Paradise is veiled (in another narration ‘surrounded’) by hardships.”

May Allaah protect us all from the Fire of Hell, Ameen.
